Policy Paper: Time For EU Nuclear Power Targets.

Writer: WePlanetWePlanet

As WePlanet aims to take an active role in shaping EU policies, we are providing the European Commission with our recommended policy papers, prepared by our experts. As a citizen-led organisation, we offer a unique perspective that represents neither business nor industry but focuses on the empowerment of citizens and the liberation of nature through the best available science and technology.

Our policy paper presents three concrete recommendations for the European Commission’s future actions to ensure a level playing field for nuclear power. We believe that, at present, low-carbon nuclear power units are forced to compete unfairly with fossil fuel units, which undermines our decarbonisation goals.

We call for:

  1. The introduction of nuclear targets, similar to how renewable energy targets are currently set.

  2. Corrections to energy market rules, ensuring that all low-carbon technologies, including nuclear, receive equal promotion and priority, rather than favouring only renewable energy sources.

  3. Revisions to state aid control practices, allowing nuclear power to benefit from rules that maximise its capacity factor and ensuring it does not have to compete with existing fossil fuel generation.

WePlanet is open to discussions on these recommendations, and we hope to contribute to better rule-making in the future.
